A report has been released by Maternity Action on how unfair redundancies impact pregnant women and new mothers. The Government committed, in January 2017, to review redundancy protection and the report calls for them to act on this.
The statistics are shocking. One in every twenty mothers are made redundant during their pregnancy, maternity leave or on their return to work. It is claimed in the report that some of these redundancies are discriminatory and many of them are unfair.
In Germany there is model of redundancy protection where women must not be made redundant at any time from notification of pregnancy up to six months after their return to work (with some exceptions). Maternity Action recommend in their report that this model is implemented in the UK.
